Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious types of cancer. Around 44,500 people are diagnosed with the condition every year in the UK. Lung cancer is when abnormal cells divide in an uncontrolled way to form a tumour in the lung. The main symptoms are a cough, breathlessness and weight loss.
There are two main types of primary lung cancer which behave and respond to treatment differently: Non-small cell lung cancer (the most common type of lung cancer) and Small cell lung cancer (most commonly found in smokers and usually treated with chemotherapy).
